Environment Committee’s Farm Weekend

Several weekends ago the Environment Committee as well as some knowledgeable chaperones loaded into a school bus and hunkered down for a few hours of travel to Harrington county, Quebec. Upon arrival, despite the immense hunger being voiced and the bitter cold that over took the weary travelers, the sheer beauty of Usher farm warmed hearts and brought smiles to everyone’s faces. Early or not quite so early the next morning, chores were distributed and the committee spent their day working in the extensive garden, chopping wood or pulling out plants covered in burs.

After a few delectable student made meals, the day concluded with an exquisite camp fire. Outside, surrounded by the thousands of stars, the committee had one of their first bonding moments as tidbits about each member were shared, s’mores were enjoyed, songs were sung, peals of laughter echoed in the night and the gleeful sound of mooing filled the background. From early morning walks and an immense thirteen person tent producing many freezing teenage girls to the frigid stream, the weekend was undoubtedly a success.

Apple Picking at Maniadakis Orchard

Maniadakis is an organic orchard located in Franklin, Quebec were production is done without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers. the environment committee is delighted to offer students and their families the chance to visit, meet the owners and pick their own apples. The outing organized by Sarah Cosentino will take place on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011. Apples collected by members of the committee will then serve for cooking and baking activities later on.

If you have signed up and are ready to go don't forget to bring:

  1. Some money to pay for your apples (10$ to 20$ depending how much you want to bring home)
  2. A reusable bag to store your apples until you are home
  3. Some rain gear just in case
  4. A lunch!

The car pool has been organized and you should know by now who you are going with. The official meeting time if you haven't arranged anything with your poolers is 9am at RWA, on the Ainslie side.

Here are the directions to go there:
